A game by Boleslavsky

A few years ago a Russian master told me that Isaac Boleslavsky had a really energetic style. It must be games like this one that he was referring to!

Alexander Kotov - Isaak Boleslavsky, URS-ch14 1945

Alexander Kotov - Isaak Boleslavsky [A45]

URS-ch14/Moscow 1945

1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 d6 4. f3 Nf6 5. e4 g6 6. Qd2 Nbd7 7. Bh6 Bxh6 8. Qxh6

White has built up a strong center, but neglected development, so Black exploits that with energy so typical of Boleslavsky's early games. 8... c5 Between moves 9 and 13 Black continuously attacks the center. 9. c3 Qb6 10. Qd2 cxd4 11. cxd4

11... e5 d4 is weak, because Ng1 can't come to f3, so Black immediately targets d4. 12. Na3 d5

Now the other Knight can't come to c3, so attacking e4 is also a perfectly reasonably idea! This also prevents Nc4, which was surely an idea behind Na3. 13. dxe5 Nxe5 14. Bb5+ Kf8 15. exd5 Kg7 16. Ne2 a6 17. Bc4 Re8 18. Rd1 Bh3 Mobilization of Black's pieces is completed! 19. Kf1 Nxf3 20. Qf4 Ng4!

He can only take them one at a time! 21. Qxf3 Ne3+ 22. Ke1 Bxg2 23. Qf2 Bxh1 Now Black is way ahead on material, and White king is very weak, so the rest is easy. 24. Rd3 Qb4+ 25. Rd2 Rac8 26. Bb3 Bxd5 27. Bxd5 Nxd5 28. Qd4+ Qxd4 29. Rxd4 Nf6 0-1
